About The Author

MARSHA ROSS, the author of INSIDE HOLLYWOOD, ran away from home at 16 and won a scholarship to the school of Engineering at UCLA. She left Colorado, and never looked back. In her sophomore year of college she became a professional photorapher, which helped her pay her way through nine years at UCLA. She didn't like calculus or slide rules so she changed majors the first week of school, after being adopted by the editor of the UCLA humor magazine, Satyr. She has a degree in psychology, magna cum laude and Masters of Fine Arts in motion picture production, screenwriting and entertainment law. Some of her short films are on her Tube Channel.

She became a well known multi-media artist who opened Los Angeles's first photographic art gallery PHOTOSPHERE. Elton John attended the opening and it was featured on national television news twice, and in various national and local magazines. She featured exhibitions which included Laser Photography and Holgraphy, Edward Weston, and Album Cover Art, including the work of artists from Warner Brother Records, United Artists and Motown Records. This opened the door for her to work in the Album Cover Art departments in Hollywood. Her artwork eventually has been exhibited all over the world including in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Tokyo and New Delhi.

While still in graduate school, Marsha also worked as a Hollywood journalist writing cover stories for New York Magazine, New West Magazine, and Los Angeles Magazine. She wrote the New York Magazine cover story 'Hollywood Fights Back', which was also featured in the first New West Magazine. She also wrote 'How Vice Cops Work', an in-depth interview with Joseph Wambaugh, which was enlightening and shocking, and was the product of many hours of funny and interesting recorded interviews. He even took her to the police department's favorite strip club, 'the ball' where the police hung out. He made it the condition of continuing the revealing interview.

She worked with the Los Angeles World Hunger project and she wrote and directed a sociological game which was played at the Los angeles Convention Center, with three hundred different roles enacted and played by a large group of Hollywood power players. It was designed to discover why hunger persists in the world eventhough there is no shortage of food in the world. It was televised twice and the results were astounding. Food is used as a weapon.

She met the famous restauranteur Nicky Blair at the Playboy Mansion, where she was covering a New York Magazine story. Nicky helped her to investigate the current state of the rich and powerful Hollywood elite. He decorated all of his restaurants with Marsha's art, and fed her almost every other dinner for many years. He made her the star of his Hollywood restaurant on Sunset. She art was exhibited and decorated his three restaurants in Hollywood, London, and Las Vegas.

Once, while visiting Nicky in London, where she met the son of the governor of Mecca. He became one of the his very best friends, long before radical Islam and 9/11. The Prince and Marsha became fast friends, and although their differences were gigantic (she was a Jewish Buddhist), and their senses of humor brought them together, and they had great fun. She joined his entourage after he flew to California where they occupied two bungallows at the Beverly Hills Hotel, for his birthday. They traveled the world together along with his servants, cooks, valets and close friends. He enrolled in the Georgetown Graduate School of International relations without even filling out an application. She became his tutor, and they moved into an incredible mansion, down the block from Ethel Kennedy on Chainbridge Road in Virginia. Mrs Kennedy. invited them to join her and her children in crashing Ted Kennedy's birthday party.

They were all given red sweatshirts that said "Mate" of the Resolute (the name of his boat). They danced in a line, while singing a song to the tune of 'Popeye the Sailor Man.' Which included a line about his senate attendance ("he's not there very much, but he'll keep in touch," he's Teddy the Sailorman).

Marsha read all of the Prince's required books, did his research, taught him about nuclear energy and it's dangers. She  took his tests and wrote his 20 page, footnoted final term paper, about the American invasion of Grenada. Marsha claimed was an event staged by the Reagan administrationto change the news from the 250 America Marines killed in Beirut just a few days earlier. He got an A, and was published in class book about American Interventionism. His family was impressed, and he quit while he was ahead and returned to Saudi Arabia and immediately got married.

All told Marsha traveled around the world three times, and once, while on photographic safari in Africa, in an elevator in the Nairobi Hilton, she met the charming Foreign Minister of the 'Polisario.'He was an attorney who was the head of the guerilla front which was at war with the mentally ill and senile king Hassan of Morocco, and in a scheme created and manipulated by Henry Kissinger starting with the historical 'Green March' (google it).

She learned of a secret genocide as brutal as Nazi Germany; the U.S. and Morocco were secretly attempting to exterminate the entire native population of the Saharaoui Bedouin, of the once Spanish Sahara colony, to steal the mineral rich Sahara, which had the second largest deposits of phosphates in the world. They dropped two million dollars a day of leftover napalm on these people who lived in tents and died. She joined the movement stop it, and went to work to stop this secret war. She lobbied Washington.D.C., the U.N., and met with other diplomats to stop the Western Sahara genocide. She was the Los Angeles Counsel for the Polisario. They ultimately won the war and are now one the planets newest country is the Western Sahara, and it's on every map, globe and atlas of the world, and finally the ancient bedouins of the Sahara can live their lives in peace.

She collects and sells and a large collection of prints, posters, originals and love letters from Milton Glaser, the famous New York artist. She traveled around the world many times, looking for love and adventure. She found both and her art was inspired by what she learned.

She became well known in Hollywood where her art was on display at Nicky Blair's celebrity restaurant on Sunset Strip, dating Warren Beatty & Maximilian Shell. The work of Los Angeles artist Marsha Ross seems to be the natural outcome of the fast paced information based culture of the twenty-first century. Surreal, erotic, humorous and complex are some of the words that come to mind when viewing the portfolio of works that Marsha Ross has exhibited and amassed in the years that she has been working as a professional artist. Fluent in art history and the contemporary icons of the modern world, Ross is able to lyrically juxtapose images that are haunting and often satiric.

One of Ross’ earliest influences comes from travels to India, Tantra, Buddhism and other religious art of India, Burma, Nepal and Tibet. Consequently, her work lends itself to meditative contemplation. She has traveled extensively in non-Western cultures and understands how a static image can move and change if stared at even for a short period of time. She collects art from India and Nepal.

Humor and nature seem to be the constants that run through the work of Ross. Skyscrapers, butterflies, flowers, constellations and wild animals interact in an imaginary world that exists only in the mind of art. Mysterious women emerge from flowers, combine with heavenly images of planets and birds, creating sensuous and personal work. The work has a highly finished quality and as such allows the images to penetrate the latent world of dreams and the subconscious.

Marsha Ross' website [www.spiritualsurrealart.com] is a chance to view some of Ross’ work that has been shown and sold in Paris, New Delhi, New York and Mexico City. She has made short films that are funny and beautiful, and can be seen on the Marsha Ross' channel on YouTube.

Ross' commercial work includes album covers, trade ads, billboards, corporate commissions and book covers. Her art was on exhibition at “Nicky Blair’s”celebrity restaurant on Sunset in Hollywood for close to ten years. Marsha lives in the woods above Beverly Hills with a wolf, dog, a cat, with an amazonian garden a hundred year old trees and a mountain in her backyard.
